Turbo a GTA ATMO

Postby Kiwi GTA » Mon Feb 13, 2017 5:46 am

Hi, has anyone put a turbo on a GTA ATMO. If so did they have to drop the compression and by how much? What size and type of turbo did they use? If anyone has any specs on one that's been done or photos of their build would be great. Seriously considering it as the motor will be coming out for a total rebuild soon, not that it needs it but would like to keep it fresh.

Don't know if anybody has ever turboed an atmo in a GTA. The atmo isn't just a turbo GTA without a turbo if you get my drift. Atmos are odd fire not even fire and run carbs not injection so the fuel system is not compatible, not sure if the turbo manifold even bolts on the atmo. Anything is doable but be prepared to change pretty much everything , buy some after market management and without changing to lower comp pistons you'll be pretty limited on the boost you can run. Volvo sites might be a good place to look as they do very silly things with this engine in Scandinavia

Depends on your budget. Its pretty far away from a bolt on conversion.
Also depends on how original you want it to be.
i'd wager that it would be far cheaper to have mounts and stuff made and cram in a built LS1,
With fairly minimal work, 400-500 bhp is readily achievable, it's about 100lbs heavier than the PRV tho.

I believe El Presidenté Dell has spent the last ten years planning to put a rotrex supercharger on an atmo, or maybe he's shelved that Idea now...
It may be a better idea purely from a heat management perspective, unless you're after max BHP and the turbo pppppssstttt... :D

Have almost completed a rebuild of my Atmo (being done by my son in Auckland). About 4-6 weeks from completion. Rings, bearings, new Valeo clutch, head porting and planing, customer exhaust, modified cams (ground by Franklin's in Auckland to specs provided by Martin Faulks), modification of inlet manifold to increase gas velocity and flow and facilitate conversion to a Quick Fuel Predator Black Diamond 450 cfm four-barrel carb (from the Weber DGAS which both my cars had, and which worked well), all frost plugs etc replaced, new stainless steel coolant tubes front to rear, plus gearbox refurbish while out.
From what I've read a decently worked Atmo is at least as quick, probably quicker, than a factory turbo, and is lighter.
Plus the larger 2.9 Atmo engine has oodles of bottom end torque, runs cooler etc.
The guy I bought my blue '90 off in Auckland has an Atmo that has been supercharged, but based on the condition of my car when I bought it, I wouldn't hold out much hope that it is a model installation.
There is another in Auckland fitted with a twin turbo V6 (Safrane?) engine.
But I haven't seen either of those cars.
Personally, I would rebuild what you've got with some mods. It will go like stink, and still be reasonably original (mine even has the factor air-cleaner housing with an Aussie made insert designed for performance V8s).
I will post a heap of pictures and a video clip with sound once mine is back together.
My engine is now fully assembled apart from exhaust and inlet manifolds etc which are still under construction.
Cheers
Graeme

Great to get the feedback, I understand it's not going to be an easy thing and was just wondering if anybody had given it a go. The car is going to get a major overhaul and I'll be looking to get the power up there. Very interested in what Graeme has done and would like more info on that.

Building an LS3 engined GTA at the moment. Weight is close to that of the turbo lump and is narrower and shorter. Same length. Hoping to have it on the road in the spring.

Yes rebuilt UN1 with LSD and Single piece shaft upgrade with adaptor kit they use on the mid engined V8 kit cars. Engine is rated 495 bhp 480 ft/lbs.

The single piece shaft upgrade is that replacing the two piece shaft in the UN1 gearbox?
I'm very interested in the mod and have been looking into it a bit. Looks like a good way to go.
Who did you get the shaft and adaptor kit through as I think this is a better option for me.

The parts are available through GTO Engineering. They are made by Quaife but Quaife will not sell you the bits as they have an arrangement with GTO engineering. A couple of other people have had small batch runs done by other companies in other countries too but the tooling costs are high so makes them financially unviable. I looked everywhere but had to bite the bullet and pay a lot of money. Anything more than 350ft/lbs and it simply has to be upgraded.

I'm just here for the gasoline.
